Tichon Beth Am Registration Form 5783 (Grades 8-12)

We know that teens are deeply curious, wildly creative, and spend much time thinking about their own identities and how they fit into their community and the world around them. We also know that they have extremely busy schedules and face many pressures, all of which have been exacerbated by the pandemic. This all means that truly meaningful Jewish education for Post-B'nai Mitzvah students must provide containers for students to explore these questions using both ancient and contemporary Jewish wisdom, in a way that allows students to work together to come to their own conclusions. And all of this must fit in between, homework, jobs, friends, and other commitments!

Like all our education programs at Beth Am, Tichon Beth Am is not religious school, as least not the way many of us experienced it growing up. This year, we will be piloting a different kind of experience:

  • Elective: Teens will have choice to pick the kind of learning they want to engage. Some of the units have been designed based on their feedback from the summer, and the teens will create their own curriculum for their spring learning session.

  • Multi-faceted: The teens will have opportunities to find Jewish wisdom through multiple modalities and in different parts of their life. In the fall we will learn about World Jewry and peoplehood through Jewish cooking, in the winter we will explore the Jewish call to justice through our Advocacy program, and in the spring students will decide how they want to best discover Jewish history and ethics! Each unite culminates in a group project

  • Fitting into busy schedules: The program will meet from 6PM- 7:30 PM throughout the year on most Sunday evenings. Each week we will begin with time for provided communal dinner. We will then break up into our learning circles for the remainder of the time.
  • Teen led: Teens will help their teachers direct the learning every step of the way. While Rav Tyler and other educators will be our lead facilitators for the program, our hope is that the teens will take ownership of these circles, so that we answer the questions that are at the front of their minds.

The first week of Tichon will begin on September 11th at 6 PM. The link to sign up your teens can be found below. Please let me know if you have any questions. You can email me at ravtyler@bethambaltimore.org.  Or call (410) 523-2446.
